Rainy Day Dog Activities

Rainy days might wash away your outdoor adventure plans, but that doesn’t mean your dog has to be bored or restless. Whether you’ve got a high-energy Husky or a cozy little Cavapoo, there are tons of fun and mentally stimulating activities you can do inside to keep tails wagging.

Here’s a list of creative, engaging rainy day activities that will turn any gloomy day into a pawsitive experience for your pup!

1. Play the Shell Game (Dog Version)

Hide a treat under one of three cups, shuffle them, and see if your dog can sniff out the prize. This game sharpens your dog’s problem-solving skills and is super rewarding (literally)!

2. Indoor Obstacle Course

Use chairs, cushions, blankets, and boxes to create a mini agility course in your living room. Teach your dog to crawl under tables, hop over broomsticks, or weave through dining chairs.

3. Tug of War

This classic game can help burn off energy quickly. Use a rope toy or an old towel—just remember to teach your dog to “drop it” to keep the game under control.

4. DIY Puzzle Toys

You don’t need fancy toys—stuff a muffin tin with tennis balls and hide treats under a few. Let your dog sniff out the snacks! Or use an empty cardboard box filled with crumpled paper and treats for some foraging fun.

5. KONG or Lick Mat Magic

Stuff a KONG toy with peanut butter, yogurt, or mashed banana, then freeze it for a long-lasting treat. Lick mats are also amazing for keeping dogs calm and engaged.

6. Training Sessions

Short 5–10 minute training bursts are a great way to mentally tire your dog. Practice commands like “sit,” “stay,” “roll over,” or teach fun tricks like “spin” or “high five.”

7. Nose Work and Scent Games

Hide treats around the house and let your dog sniff them out. Start easy, then increase the difficulty by placing them behind furniture or inside boxes.

8. Story Time or Calm Snuggles

Believe it or not, your dog enjoys hearing your voice! Read aloud while they snuggle next to you, or put on some calming dog music or a nature show. It’s bonding time, and a great way for anxious dogs to relax during a storm.

9. Doggie Movie Marathon

Pop on a dog-themed movie (like Homeward Bound or The Secret Life of Pets), grab your pup’s favorite chew toy, and cuddle up. Sometimes, the best activity is just being together.

10. Spa Day at Home

Rainy day = perfect excuse for a little pampering! Give your dog a gentle bath, brush out their coat, clean their ears, or even try dog-safe nail painting (for the fashionistas out there!).
